Jeff Cannon - Biography“Rich warm vocals……memorable songs……incisive lyrics……a
thoughtful & beguiling performer”: these are some of the things
being written about Bloomington, Indiana-based singer-songwriter Jeff Cannon.
The Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange said of his 1999 CD release 2True: “Cannon’s lyrics are full of verbal photographs: raging waters, broken
compasses, the holiday parade. There’s a piece of your life in every one
of
these songs. These are songs of life and love, anticipation and angst, with a
tender caress for the mind and soul. From the heart of Boston to the world,
Jeff Cannon springs true.” On his new CD Lights Out!, Jeff delivers a contemporary folk CD he describes
as “of, and about, stories and
storytellers”. Tastefully accompanied by the
members of the Carrie Newcomer Band, the songs and their characters remain
front and center throughout. Included is Jeff’s haunting song Indiana,
which features a beautiful flute solo by folk luminary Grey Larsen. |

Since leaving Boston in October 1996 Jeff has logged
over 300,000 miles touring the country having played in over 200 venues and
festivals, including the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in 1997. He has
released three independent CD’s to date, and has been included on many
compilations. He has won or been a finalist in numerous major songwriter
showcase competitions, including a final 3 appearance in the Boston Acoustic
Underground. In 1995 and 1996 Jeff was a member of the team that
rescued, reorganized, and managed the landmark Club Passim in Boston; also
while in Boston he street performed for thousands of hours in the streets and
subways, hosted two high profile open mike nights, and booked a full-time folk
venue. Jeff has been the subject of many print articles both for his own music
and his contributions to the folk community. Jeff has organized countless
benefit shows and group projects, and
helped to co-found Bloomington Folk Live,
which has served to promote and present folk music in central Indiana. Jeff grew up on the campus of
Columbia University in New York City, where his father, John Cannon, was the
university chaplain who in 1963 founded Columbia's Postcrypt Coffeehouse, now
one of the longest running coffeehouses in the country. Many weekend nights of
Jeff's childhood were spent soaking up the 1960's folk music at the Postcrypt.
He studied voice and sang classical music professionally in New York in his
pre-teen years. In the early 1980's his rock band the Kids was a popular
fixture in the Washington DC rock scene. For 12 years Jeff enjoyed a career as
a hotel manager, which he left to resume his music career fulltime in 1994. He
is currently also completing a degree in Journalism from Indiana University. Jeff continues to tour nationally with his storyteller wife Angie and daughters Emma and Abby. |
