(5/1/03) Jeff receives grant for book
research!
Indiana University's Honors College has awarded Jeff one of five
Creative Activities grants for 2003 in order to complete the research
for his book "Buskers".
This summer Jeff will be making four extended
trips to Boston in order to conduct interviews with the street performers that
work in Harvard Square. The book will be a nonfiction collection of
profiles tied together with the narrative thread of a full season of
performing.
"It's not so much about street performers ultimately," says Jeff. "It's
about the organic expression that happens out in that arena. And it's
about all of us in our efforts to find our potential in the face of our
mortality. Or something like that. It's dense territory, but I'm
rescued by the fact that the performers are so wonderfully
entertaining."
(4/1/03) Jeff named one of 15 Chancellor's
Scholars!
As if life needed help getting stranger, Jeff has just been named one
of the top 15 scholars at Indiana University by Chancellor Sharon
Brehm. Besides the honor itself, there is a financial component. When
asked about it, Jeff said, "As a rule, financial components do not
suck. But this is a great academic tradition, and it's truly just an
honor to be added to the list of people who have received it before."
Jeff has been pursuing a journalism degree at IU since the fall of 2000
(thus the light touring schedule),
and is on schedule to graduate in May of '04.
